How soon after I get engaged should I start planning my wedding?

It isn’t necessary to jump right into wedding planning immediately after getting engaged – but there is one thing you should have a quick conversation about. Do you want to have a short engagement or a long engagement? The average couple is engaged for 13 months, however there are pros and cons to both shorter or longer engagements. First and foremost after getting engaged, make sure to enjoy it and spend some time with friends, family, and each other in the first few weeks after getting engaged!

A shorter engagement (less than a year): There are plenty of reasons to have a shorter engagement, ranging from if you want to get married in a specific season or even if you don’t want to wait as long! However, if you want your wedding to be less than a year away, it is probably a good idea to just a week or two before starting to plan on the bigger items like the venue, vendors, and who you want to be at your wedding. This way, you can make sure everyone from your guests to your venues are available for your wedding day.

A longer engagement (more than a year): A longer engagement allows some more time to finalize details, especially if you’re not set on a specific wedding season or location. If you want your wedding to be more than a year away, you don’t need to start planning until three or four weeks after getting engaged.

The most important thing to remember after getting engaged is to enjoy your engagement first! If you’re looking for next steps on how to start planning your wedding, check out our guide coming soon: How do I start planning my wedding?
